The Settlement, Maryport's Community Arts and Learning Centre As part of the refurbishment of The Settlement, a Grade II listed building, a proportion of the budget was set aside to commission artists. Cathy Newbery, Public Art Consultant, worked closely with the centre manger Jane Donaldson and Cumbria County Council Children’s Services to identify opportunities and manage the process with the developer Capita Symonds. The artists were: Roger Lee – to photograph the building through the 12 month refurbishment programme. Christine Wilcox-Baker – worked on the interior design throughout the building including the lights, colours, flooring and bespoke wallpaper. Paul Scott – developed the signage for the rooms in porcelain Julian Longcake – created a desk/artwork from one of the old pianos left in the old building The radio board from the attic was also saved and is now on display in the foyer with postcards from around the world that serves as a record of the coverage and reach of this local group. All the artists have contributed to creating a special building that welcomes the community and provides a high quality, warm and welcoming facility. The Settlement supports artists and creativity with a dedicated artists studio space, arts barn, multi media room and conference facilities. The Settlement first opened in 1937 and in previous years has been used for a wide range of educational activities ranging from poetry groups to wrestling. It has also been used as an exhibition venue for many famous artists including the first solo show of Sheila Fell. As part of the refurbishment programme a local historian carried out extensive research.
