Mark Gibbs

Mark's work moves between realism and abstraction, and between paintings on shaped canvases, and constructions. These constructions occupy an ambiguous space between thick paintings and shallow wall mounted sculpture.  The paintings seem to grow towards you rather than taking a more traditional approach, which is to create an illusory square window through which we see another world.

The work is influenced by landscape, particularly the very different geography experienced on journeys in India, Sri Lanka and Morocco; but Cumbria is a constant presence often acting as a foil to these extreme tropical or arid environments.  Cumbria is also depicted in watercolour, where Mark uses a medium with a traditional reputation in a modern way. A further theme is the perception and status of animals in different societies, especially the importance of cows to rural India and Cumbria.

A graduate of Cumbria Institute of the Arts, Mark now works from West Walls Artist's Studios in Carlisle, he has exhibited widely in Cumbria and has had several London shows.  His exhibition Lanka Landscapes at the Ice House Gallery, Kensington was featured on local television news, and is probably the only show by a Cumbrian based artist to be reviewed by two Sri Lankan newspapers.
