Eskdale Mill The Mill can trace its history back to 1578 and is one of the oldest in England, with 18th century oatmeal machinery driven by two 12ft. overshot waterwheels, working daily. Originally belonging to the lord of the manor, and sold to yeoman Edward Hartley in 1737 – with a promise not to build nearby any other water cornmill – it is now owned by Cumbria County Council, who maintain the Mill as a unique and unspoiled insight into a past way of life. Open
April to September from 11.00 am – 5.00 pm except Monday.
Evening guided tours for small or large groups can be arranged – just call at the Mill. The Mill is owned by the Eskdale Mill & Heritage Trust, and is supported by the Trust's patrons, members, volunteers and by donations. To apply for membership of the Trust, please write to Roger Putnam at Bower Bank, Irton, Holmrook, Cumbria CA19 1TD. |
