Harbour Lights

Maryport schoolchildren and members of the local community joined forces with three top artists on a public art programme to help enhance a coastal defence scheme in Maryport. 

The scheme aims to enhance significantly the built environment in the historic harbour area and improve the presentation of the town to visitors and locals alike. It  also secures vulnerable areas of the town from flooding. 

A Lottery Grant, administered through Arts Council North West, and supported by Maryport Developments Ltd and Allerdale Borough Council has funded three opportunities for artists to create work in the community and construct art works for the refurbishment of Tongue Pier. The artists are Paul Scott (ceramics), Alan Ward (sculptor in stone/letter cutting), creative writing team Liar Inc and Tony Stallard. 

Paul Scott's ceramic tiles enhance the red sandstone of the North Quay floodway. 

Netherhall School pupils worked with Liar Inc. to create writing that was inscribed by Alan Ward into carved slabs set into the deck of Tongue Pier. 

Tony Stallard worked with Maryport-based arts group CA15 on video and film projects and produced ‘The keeper’, an interactive light and sentinel eye feature mounted on the pier end mast.
