Personal Baggage

Tackling Waste Management through creative community participation in West Cumbria.

The Personal Baggage project has provided the community of Distington in North Copeland an opportunity to express their feelings and opinions about their experiences of living in a village surrounded by other people's waste, through working and engaging with sculptor Jac Scott and photographer Vince Bevan.

Through a series of creative workshops with school children, young people and residents of the village, people considered their personal responsibility for the rubbish on their own doorstep.  The process had led to the production of a touring exhibition that has provided a focus for the Distington community in advocating the waste minimisation message to other residents of Copeland and Allerdale.

The project is a collaboration between artist Jac Scott, Distington Community Participation Project, Distington Clubs for Young People, Distington Craft Club and Copeland Borough Council's Local Arts Development Agency.  The project is funded by Cumbria County Council, Copeland Borough Council, and Alco through the Environment Trust.  The project has also been supported by Cumbria Crushing and Recycling Ltd.
