Description
Jamie works as a freelance curator throughout Cumbria. He has always been keen on drawing and after many years working with artists in art galleries, he started to develop his own line drawing style during a tour of Italy in 2007 when he started to keep a sketchbook. While working as the Curator of Keswick Museum & Art Gallery he took an evening class in Printmaking at Carlisle Art College, where he became fascinated by the aquatint etching technique. Since then he has branched out into other printmaking techniques including drypoint engraving and trace monoprinting. Jamie's work is principally concerned with buildings. He is particularly inspired by the Fellside area of Kendal where he lives – the style of the houses and the way they are stacked up the hill. He also produces artwork from his imagination, again inspired by Fellside, hill villages, Cumbrian castles or by the idea of city skylines transferred into the countryside.

Description
Featuring 50 contemporary textile artworks from 12 countries, The Climate Is Changing explores the impact of human actions on the environment – one of the most pressing issues facing the world today. Truly original and international in scope, the exhibitors’ pieces were selected by jury, and represent participants from Europe, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, Canada, the USA and Romania. Using felt as a representational or metaphorical medium, the installations and mixed media artworks confront key themes of responsibility, awareness, and destruction and regeneration, encapsulating the relationship between individuals and their personal interaction with the experience of their habitat. “Nostalgia, protest, awareness, concern for the present and the future of humanity, affirmation of anthropological values, ideas for new undertakings, are the themes these works interpret, through the infinite forms and colours that felt, more than many other materials, is able to communicate.” Daniela Degl’Innocenti – Textile Historian, Museo del Tessuto, Prato Modern yet profoundly traditional, felt is a natural medium deeply embedded in the textile history of all cultures, with ancient roots in the third Millennium BC. In The Climate Is Changing its tactile, sustainable qualities are innovatively combined with other recycled materials as well metals and plastic into an expressive medium. This juxtaposition of craft and skill with a physical, versatile representation of the handmade fibres that bind us together works on a personal and collective as well as local and international level, drawing the viewer along with the maker ‘in touch’, and into the debate.

George Mallory was obsessed with becoming the first person to conquer the untouched Mount Everest. He was last seen 800 feet below the summit in 1924, before the clouds rolled in and he disappeared into legend. His death stunned the world. 75 years later, climber Conrad Anker’s life became intertwined with Mallory’s after finding his frozen body with all his belongings intact. The only thing missing was a photograph of his wife, Ruth, which Mallory had promised to place on the summit. Haunted by Mallory’s story, Conrad Anker returns to Everest with British climbing prodigy Leo Houlding to unravel the mysteries surrounding his disappearance.

Description
Featuring ten-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater, The Ultimate Wave follows a quest to find the perfect wave-riding experience. Filmed in Tahiti and among the islands of French Polynesia, the film showcases dramatic giant screen surfing action in a unique Pacific paradise. Kelly Slater and a group of friends arrive in Tahiti. With their host, Tahitian surfer Raimana Van Bastolaer they will seek out the best waves breaking on the reef at the famed surf site Teahupo’o. Kelly and Raimana share a passion for the waves, but different ideas about what surfing means: is it a modern competitive sport or an ancient Polynesian wave-riding art? Either way, if the right conditions arise, they hope to surf some unique giant barrels created by storm swells breaking atop the shallow reef. As the surfer’s quest unfolds, the film explores the hidden forces at work shaping the waves and the islands that lie in their path. In stylized animated segments, the audience is propelled into the cosmos to discover the sources of a wave’s energy; and then back to Earth to witness the swirling dance of the atmosphere that will transfer energy deep into the ocean and shape a wave’s long journey across thousands of miles of open Pacific.

Bindman Talk: American Literary Tourists in Wordsworthshire in the nineteenth century: from the idea of national property to the first national park. A talk by Professor Melanie Hall. Professor Melanie Hall will discuss noted American visitors to Wordsworth and Wordsworthshire during nineteenth century. Although Wordsworth wanted the area to become a national property, national parks happened first in the United States. Efforts to create a national park in the Lakes had begun by the 1880s and American visitors helped bring this about. Professor Hall is an associate professor and Director of Museum Studies at Boston University, Massachusetts. Held in the Jerwood Centre, the Wordsworth Museum.

No man is an island, but sometimes a puppet can be a table. Blind Summit Theatre’s latest show, a major hit at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe, stars Moses, a puppet with a cardboard head who is having an existential crisis at the hands of his puppeteers. Told with Blind Summit’s trademark extreme puppetry style, the story combines the dark humour of Samuel Beckett and the flat-pack technology of Ikea. An evening of alternative puppetry that the grown-ups will not want to miss.

Description
In the year that marks the bicentenary of Dickens’ death, two British stars of stage and screen bring to life the universally loved characters of one of the world’s best-loved authors: from Mr Pickwick, Mr Micawber and Mrs Nickleby to Mrs Gamp, Uriah Heep and Scrooge. Robert Powell and Elizabeth Garvie reveal Dickens as celebrity, social reformer, actor, entrepreneur, and, above all, supreme entertainer. This celebration will be the perfect curtain-raiser for Theatre by the Lake’s own production of Great Expectations in our 2012 Summer Season.

Enjoy a virtual expedition with Tim Mosedale as he recounts tales and anecdotes from the numerous trips he has led over the years. Remarkable photographs coupled with video footage combine for a visual feast. Tim will also recount his 2011 expedition where he summited Everest to become the tenth Britain to have topped out from both sides. Whilst some of the stories are not for the faint-hearted, this is a lecture you won’t want to miss. “A vivid, fascinating insight into what happens on Everest.” Sir Chris Bonington

This is The Royal Opera's first complete presentation of Puccini's Il trittico since 1965. Leading director Richard Jones staged his witty, darkly comic realisation of Gianni Schicchi for The Royal Opera in 2007, and here he completes the trio. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano will conduct. Il trittico ('the triptych'), first unveiled in 1918, represented an operatic departure where Puccini offered three contrasting one-act works instead of a single evening-length narrative. Sung in Italian with subtitles. Three one-act operas.

Previously Roger Llewellyn thrilled audiences with his show Sherlock Holmes the Death and Life in 2011, now, by popular demand, Llewellyn’s longest running show comes to Theatre by the Lake. The world’s greatest fictional detective confronts the most complex case of all… his own psyche. This one man show by David Stuart Davies explores the mind of the real man – not ‘the thinking machine’, but a passionate and secretive man, with a cutting sense of humour. Expect fine wit, humour, high drama, and a touch of pathos – ‘elementary’ aspects of this original and entertaining play.

JMW Turner - The Passage of Mount St Gothard from the centre of Teufels Broch (Devil’s Bridge), 1804 At over one metre tall, Turner’s monumental watercolour of this notorious Alpine pass epitomises the very notion of the Sublime at a time when watercolour as a medium was competing directly with oil painting for prestige and importance. The Turner and his Contemporaries exhibition presents a unique opportunity to view the work not just in isolation but in the context of Turner’s career as a whole. Talks last 20 to 30 minutes and are free with admission.

February 2012 is the 200th anniversary of Dickens’ birth. Charles Dickens, the great English novelist, the most famous man of his generation, staggers on to the stage, clutches his chest, slips from his sister in law’s arms and falls down dead. Seconds later he leaps up to entertain his audience – his ""circle of affectionate friends"". . With his death got out of the way right at the start, he feels that he can now approach the rest of the evening with energy and enthusiasm. ‘Pip Utton is the doyen of the [Edinburgh] Fringe one man show’ Daily Telegraph For information about other Dickens anniversary events in the region, please visit www.dickensinteesdale.org or www.dickens2012.org

Literature Classes with Pamela Woof: Blake and Wordsworth. Unknown to each other, Blake and Wordsworth in the 1790s were writing the most original, and the most radical, poetry of the century. The Songs of Innocence (1789) and Songs of Experience (1794) seem worlds away from the Lyrical Ballads (1798); what have the lambs, playing children, chimney sweeps and sublime tiger of Blake to do with an Old Cumberland Beggar or an Idiot Boy? We shall read, or re-read, the one author in the light of the other. The poems have still the social purpose of the 1790s and beyond that the eternal appeal of true poetry and in Blake’s case, art. Held in the Jerwood Centre, the Wordsworth Museum.

Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band fans will be delighted to learn that Roger Ruskin Spear, Rodney Slater and Sam Spoons have teamed up with super-pianist Dave Glasson to create more fun, music and subversive diversion in the spirit of the ageless band. Expect diabolical mayhem from the largest number of Bonzos still playing together anywhere on the surface of the earth. Robots, smoke, unsuitable medical technology, ancient theatrical props, the kitchen sink and the audience (you get to join in!) all combine to re-create the atmosphere of those formative years of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

Broadcast Live from The National Theatre to Fellinis, Ambleside. In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father's cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl - now a famed American film director - looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams. Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright's new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood's golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher - whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley - returns to play Jacob.

Painting on silk requires a technique and discipline all of it own, yet it retains unpredictable qualities which make it a very exciting medium in which to work. Christine hopes in her work to convey this excitement and the sense of fluidity and movement experienced whilst creating the pieces. These are largely inspired by forms, lines and patterns found in nature.

Description
The new gallery, "New Horizons - Conflict & Change" will will become part of the main museum displays and will be based around real objects from the Copeland Museum Collection. It will look at life in Copeland from 5th to the 16thcentury, a period which left the area with some of its most impressive monuments. We are very excited about our new gallery, which will have something for all the family including a strong interactive element. We'll have lots going on to celebrate the opening of this new gallery. Visit www.thebeacon-whitehaven.co.uk for latest news. The gallery itself will be presented to look like the interior of a medieval castle, inspired by Egremont Castle, and will include it’s very own stained glass window. Some of the interactive elements will include Build your own Gosforth cross. This will be a replica Viking cross, modelled exactly on the stone cross that stands in the church yard of St Mary’s Church, Gosforth and a Feudal Pyramid puzzle whereby visitors build a pyramid in illustrated wooden blocks which depict the feudal hierarchy that existed during medieval times. There will also be a model of an Anglo-Saxon warrior, complete with armour.
